Maria Sharapova performance at Wimbledon in press
|
British newspapers are full of praise for Maria Sharapova’s triumphant performance at Wimbledon.
“A star is born,” writes The Sunday Times. “Maria Sharapova, a 17-year-old tennis player from Russia, who makes shrieking noises on the court like a little jet engine and has the instincts of a fighter pilot, defeated Serena Williams. She surprised everyone by her first reaction right after the match, when she rushed into the stands to embrace her father Yury and then grabbed his mobile phone to call her mother in Florida”.
“For this victory”, the newspaper continues, “Sharapova got a check for 560.5 thousand pounds, but in the future her earnings may be much higher. Experts agree that during the course of her career Maria can get up to 50 mil pounds from endorsement deals”.
The Independent calls Sharapova “the Queen of Wimbledon 2004, with the whole world at her feet”. “At 17 this Russian is a real superstar. Just like Germany’s Boris Bekker and Brazil’s Pele were in their day, and Britain’s Wayne Rooney is now.”
“Frowning during the match, grinning and finally laughing for joy Maria became the new darling of the English tennis yesterday. This Russian is the first from her country to win Wimbledon”, commented the paper.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, Sharapova, “a 17-year-old sensation from Russia, was born for fame and wealth”. “She has a rare combination of youth, beauty, charisma and an athletic genius,” writes the newspaper.
“Yesterday morning the British bookmakers gave odds of 12 to 1 that Sharapova will lose to Williams in two straight sets. But when she walked on to the court with a cold head and determination to win, she seemed to have done the impossible,” added the newspaper. "The Observer", in their turn, calls Maria “a Russian miracle”. “It’s a long way from Siberia, where Sharapova was born, to South London, where Wimbledon 2004 took place. And now this journey has been completed with a triumph.”
